A dinner at “Dans le Noir?” doesn’t unfold the way we expect, simply because we don’t know what to expect. And even when we think we do, we often realise at the end of the experience that our assumptions have been turned upside down.
Senses put to the test
From the very first moments, the sense we rely on most in our daily lives is taken away. Complete darkness, previously unknown, takes over until the end of the meal. No matter how hard your eyes try to adjust, they won’t help - letting go is the only option to truly experience “Dans le Noir ?”.
Touch and hearing take over. “Where am I?” “Who’s next to me?” “Do we have cutlery? Glasses?” So many questions that only your senses can answer. You’ll start by checking what’s in front of you once your guide has helped you to your seat, then wonder how many other guests are in the room. Soon, you’ll realise that several strangers at your table are asking themselves the same questions. The barriers fall, and surprisingly natural conversations begin to flow.
Taste and smell quickly step in. Without even hearing them arrive, the guide is already serving the first dish. You smell what’s in front of you, and guesses start flying. But just as quickly as they appear, those guesses fade with the first bite turning the whole experience into something as fun as it is disorienting.
A new perspective on the everyday
Between guessing games and tasting, conversations with your guide-waiter flow naturally. And gradually, you come to realise that the situation you find so unsettling is, in fact, the daily reality of the kind, attentive person keeping you safe in the dark.
The roles are reversed: while you might usually help someone with visual impairment in the street, here you’re the one relying entirely on them to move around.
This experience puts our everyday worries into perspective during this extraordinary moment out of time, until we return to the light and finally get answers to some of our questions.
