Our main partner in England is the Fredericks Foundation. Paul Barry Walsh, its Founder and Chairman actively supported the project and helped to finance “Dans le Noir ?” London.
Paul Barry-Walsh visited "Dans le Noir ?" in Paris in the Summer of 2004 and was so impressed he wanted to bring it to London. The concept of "Dans le Noir ?" is an ideal fit with the Fredericks Foundation ethos of helping people help themselves. Fredericks has provided both investment and support in order to help the success of the restaurant.
The Fredericks Foundation helps people realize their potential, often through support to individuals who wish to start-up their own business and become self-employed. It aims at assisting people who often have no one to turn to for help, or who are perhaps recovering from distressing personal situations.
Fredericks helps start 3 businesses a week making low interest loans to single parents, long term unemployed, disabled people and ex offenders. These groups are often not suited to conventional employment, neither are they often given the opportunity to seek it.
With no one else to help fund these people they would need to rely on the state and as such would be economically inactive. Fredericks will save the Treasury about £20,000,000 over the next 3 years but the real benefit of its work is in the build up in self esteem that these fledgling entrepreneurs gain.
The Fredericks Foundation believes individuals with a passion to succeed and a quest for developing knowledge and skills, should be given the opportunity to do so.
How you can help:
« Friends of Dans le Noir ? » is a simple way for foundations and companies to support the project in England. With more than 130,000 visitors since its opening in 2004, Dans le Noir? Restaurant’s reputation is spreading widly thanks to media and to word of mouth. Our quality engagement enables a high level of satisfaction. Not unlike most restaurants, we have our ups and downs. With regard to the price of our menus, we try to be as affordable as possible. However the uniqueness of our restaurants’ health and safety strategy and in particular, its waiters, means an additional cost.
We would like to point out that Dans le Noir? is like any other company and does not receive any special treatment. We have chosen not to receive any council funding due to our unique employees and we do not benefit from cost reduction or outside funding. Its profits are still limited and are used to reimburse the heavy investment put in to the company in 2004 and 2006 as it was established in Paris and London. Moreover, after tax, 10% of all profits are directly transferred to associations for blind people and to care for children.
For more details, we advise you to read our “transparency” file on our website or in our restaurants. In order to welcome you and to make your experience of this very unique moment at its best, our team goes back on stage each and every day. It is not always easy. Over the past four years, roughly ten thousand of our clients have showed their enthusiasm and provided comments about their experiences at Dans le Noir?
